1930 - 2009 Emil F. Danciu "The People's Mayor" Emil Danciu moved to Boca Raton in 1960. He and his wife, Eleanor, fell in love with this sleepy little town by the sea and decided to raise their growing family here. Emil became involved in city politics and was elected Mayor in 1969 at the young age of thirty-nine. With vision and a passion to preserve Boca's beaches and natural beauty, Emil aggressively negotiated the purchases of our beaches at Spanish River, Red Reef and South Beach Parks. He also successfully opposed a sewage outfall system off the shores of this pavillion, providing future generations with a clean, unspoiled public beach. A devoted family man, Emil believed an investment in our children was an investment in our future. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends in the parks, playgrounds and on the baseball fields which he promoted in our city. Emil also opened the legendary "Dirty Moe's” seafood restaurant, an affordable place for people of all ages to get together, eat, laugh and have fun. Emil continued his activism throughout his life. He was re-elected Mayor in 1967 and served three consecutive terms through 1993. He was affectionately known as “The People's Mayor”. He received many awards and commendations, but put more value in what he could do for others than what honors were bestowed upon him. Emil was a man of faith, a tireless civic leader with a vision for this city. His dream was to preserve Boca Raton's natural beauty for everyone to enjoy.
