Black Lesbian & Gay Centre 1992-1995 Europe's groundbreaking first support centre for Black Queer communities

  • Bridge Underpass, next to 83 Bellenden Road, Peckham, London
On the same railway arch has been affixed a supplementary plaque with the following wording "This Rainbow Plaque was unveiled in February 2024 in the presence of former staff and supporters of the Black Lesbian & Gay Centre (BLGC). Established in Haringey in 1985, the BLGC was a groundbreaking support centre for Black Queer communities. BLGC's original definition of Black: those descended through one or both parents from Africa, Asia (ie. the Middle East to China, including the Pacific Nations), Latin America and the original inhabitants of Australasia and North America and the islands of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The project found a permanent home in a converted railway arch on this site in 1992. The BLGC worked to challenge homophobia and racism in wider society, reaching people far beyond London. The centre also provided vital community resources, including advice and counselling, a library and a telephone helpline alongside a safe social drop-in space. Before the Peckham centre shut in 1995 they supported the Fifth International Lesbian and Gay People of Colour Conference; partnered with Brent HIV Centre to deliver HIV and AIDS outreach work to Asian women in the borough; produced Black by popular demand as part of the annual Lesbian Strength and Gay Pride festivities; and assisted with Haringey Black Action and Positive Images "Smash the Backlash" march and protest against Section 28, amongst other groundbreaking events and activities. The centre was the first of its kind in Europe and serves as an essential inspiration for Queer communities today. Rainbow Plaques is a national scheme highlighting the importance of intersectional LGBTQIA+ visibility in our streets and public spaces."
