Estuvo preso en Argel durante cinco años M. de Cervantes Saavedra liberado el 24 octubre 1580 mediante el rescate desembarcó en el puerto de esta ciudad primera tierra española que piso después de su cautiverio. Para conmemorar tal desembarco el M.I. Ayuntamiento de Denia acordó poner esta lápida en el año 1947 cuarto centenario del nacimiento del príncipe de los ingenios españoles.
