Brown plaque № 78201

This was the site of Colinton Smiddy (blacksmith) from the 18th century until the early 20th century. William Oliver was one of many blacksmiths to work here. His grandson still lives locally. The mural's border draws on the style of celebrated local artist, Phoebe Anna Traquair. Cuddies Lane was probably named because horses, "cuddies" in old Scots, used it to reach the smiddy and the Water of Leith crossing at the foot of Spylaw Street. The Waddell family operated the smiddy from the late 19th Century. As "horseless carriages" replaced horses, Waddell's also moved with the times, becoming motor mechanics and installing two petrol pumps on Bridge Roads. Colinton Village Pharmacy was established in 1952, just four years after the NHS began.
