Peel Park is one of Britain's earliest public parks. Opened in August 1846, it was funded entirely from public subscription. The text above was on a sign at the park gates and emphasises that the park has always been free and open to all. In 2017 the park has been renewed, due to the committed help of the local community. The bulk of the funding has again come from the public, this time via the National Lottery Parks for People Programme.
