The Outbreak of the Plague. In 1900 bubonic plague broke out in Sydney. Arthur Payne, a lorry driver at the wharves who lived in a house near this site, was the first person to contract the disease. During cleansing operations much dilapidated housing in this part of The Rocks was demolished.
