Following his marriage to Elizabeth Annie Goodnight in 1851, Lane moved to the Black Springs area of Palo Pinto County in 1856, where he raised horses on the open range of the Keechi Valley. He scouted with the Texas Rangers frontier regiment during the Civil War. After helping Goodnight drive cattle west of Fort Belknap, Lane was killed by Indians as he returned home.
