The Great Eastern (launched 1858) largest steamship of the century was built here by I.K. Brunel and J. Scott Russell

The plaque honouring The Great Eastern was originally erected by the LCC close to the boundary between the two shipyards in which she was constructed in 1954, but removed in 1974 prior to the demolition of the sheds to the north. It was reset in its present location in 1991, following the conversion of some of the Burrell's Wharf buildings into Housing.
