Roman Fort The defences of Monmouth's 1st century Roman Fort lie under this building - at right angles to the street; the fort pre-dated the Roman town of Blestium. The western inner defences of the 11th century Norman town also pass under the building, but diagonally.

English translation: "Caer Rufeinig Maw amddiffyniadau Caer Rufeinig Trefynwy, o'r ganrif 1af, o dan yr adeilad hwn, yn gyfongl i'r stryd. Yn dilyn y gaer, sefydlwyd Blestium, y dref Rufeinig. Yma hefyd y claddwyd amddiffyniadau mewnol gorllewinol y dre Normanaidd, yn yr 11 ganrif, ond yn groes-gongl."
