Built in 1830, Ballykealy House was designed in the Tudor Revival style by Thomas Cobden, who also designed Carlow Cathedral and Carlow College. The house was built for the Lecky family who, in the 1800s, owned over 1,500 acres of land in this area. The village of Ballon developed due to the presence of this vast estate. The Lecky family were Quakers up until the late 1800s and 26 members of the family are known to be buried in the Quaker graveyard here which was in use until 1950. The family's estate was bought by the Land Commission in 1953 and today the nearby house operates as a hotel.
