King Duncan's Well and Grave. These sites are linked by local tradition to Duncan I, King of Scotland from 1034-1040. Duncan was killed in a battle near Elgin in 1040 fighting against Macbeth, the rebel mormaer, lord of the province of Moray and the (subject)? for Shakespeare's tragic hero. Following his victory Macbeth seized the crown only to die in battle in 1057. King Duncan's body would have been taken to the (xxxtal)? royal burial grounds on the island of Iona. There is no evidence to suggest that this site is the location of his burial and the local tradition has probably more to do with the work of Shakespeare than with any historical fact. In the eleventh century Inverness was one of the centres for the important province of Moray. Half a mile from this point, in the area of Auldcastle Road above the Millburn, lies the reputed site of Macbeth's castle. "Duncan is in his grave; After life's fitful fever he sleeps well; Treason has done his worst." Shakespeare's Macbeth ACT III. SCENE 2
