English translation: Chinese soapberry at Chion-in Temple The Japanese soapberry is a deciduous tree found in the warm temperate zone of Honshu (west of the central part of Japan), Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa. Its fruit peel contains saponin, making it a useful tree species, as it is used as a substitute for soap, and its hard seeds are used as prayer beads. This Chinese mukuroji tree at Chion-in Temple is located on an old building site that was developed in the early Edo period, and is thought to have been planted around that time. It is rare for such a large tree to grow in Kyoto, near the northern limit of its distribution, making it a valuable specimen. On June 1, 1983, it was designated as a natural monument by Kyoto City.
