Wright R-1829-82 Cyclone radial 1525 HP. each This type of aircraft was used by the US Navy as an anti submarine warfare tracker. The plane was designed to be used and launched off an aircraft carrier. This particular aircraft served as a trainer in the US Navy until it was retired in 1973. It saw service with CDF as an aerial firefighting tanker from 1974 till 2004 and was based out of the Columbia aerial attack base during that time. It could carry 800 gallons of retardant in 4 onboard tanks. This type of plane was chosen for this task based on its sturdy air frame and its size, which worked well for the length of the Columbia airport runway. The last fire fighting mission flown by this plane was on September 22, 2004. The design, supervision and construction of this display site was done in 2007–2008 by Austin Champlin (Boy Scout Troop 570) as his Eagle Scout service project.
