Texas Historical Marker #01930

Fluvanna. Founded 1907 by a realty firm. Named by townsite surveyor, for his native county in Virginia. When Roscoe, Snyder & Pacific Railroad reached this point in Sept. 1909, a 3-day picnic was held. Buildings at Light, Texas, a mile east, were moved here. Town developed into important cattle shipping point, as long market drives were abandoned. By 1912 had 2 wagon yards and 2 blacksmith shops, among many businesses. Later, shipped much cotton before railroad ceased operating here in 1942. Now a prosperous agricultural community on good highways. (1966) #1930

Fluvanna Mercantile Company. Pioneer store noted for its continuous career on original site. Founded in 1915 by D. A. Jones and John A. Stavely, with associated shareholders. Stock--freighted in by Roscoe, Snyder & Pacific Railroad--was typical "general merchandise": clothing, materials, groceries, hardware, millinery, patent medicines, seeds, shoes. Flour and stock salt were sold by carloads. During 1930s Depression, barter prevailed, as local people traded cream and eggs for "store-bought" supplies. Early stock and display cases were given to a museum in 1958. (1970) #1931

Texas Historical Marker #01957

Former Townsite of Light. Established in 1899, with the granting of a post office, on land owned by D. C. McGregor. The school on "Jumbo" Ranch (in area settled in 1890s) was relocated here and Light began to grow. In 1905 a new, two-room school building was constructed. A decline set in, however, when the town of Fluvanna was surveyed in 1907 at terminus of the Roscoe, Snyder & Pacific Railroad. Soon citizens moved their buildings and belongings a mile west to be on the rails. Although town of Light has vanished, area still supplies water to Fluvanna. (1972) #1957
