Lieutenant Basil Charles Godfrey Place VC DSC Royal Navy. Awarded the VC whilst in command of HM Submarine X7 for a daring & successful attack on the 22nd September 1943 on the German Battleship Tirpitz achored in Kaafjord, North Norway. Place penetrated the fifty miles into a heavily protected fjord, evaded a minefield, anti submarine nets & patrols & laid his explosive charges beneath the target. His courage, endurance & contempt for danger in the face of the enemy were supreme. He subsequently had a distinguished career in the Fleet Air Arm retiring as a Rear Admiral.
