В Восточной Пруссии были сосредоточены главные силы "Великой армии", которыми он командовал лично. Этой группировке на восточном берегу Немана противостояла 1-ая Западная армия М.Б. Барклая де Толли. Здесь, в бывшем Инстербурге, Наполеон провел смотры частей Прусского вспомогательного корпуса и войск гвардии. Из более чем полумиллионной армии, вступившей в пределы России, возвратилось к домашним очагам лишь несколько десятков тысяч человек.
