Charles Darwin 1809-1882 naturalist lived in a house on this site 1838-1842
A plaque commemorating Darwin was originally installed by the London County Council on 110 Gower Street in 1906, but the building was severely damaged by bombing in 1940 and demolished soon after. The LCC waived their own rules, to not commemorate 'sites of', by installing this replacement on the Biological Sciences building of University College London in 1961.
