Командовал 3-м Белорусским фронтом, войска которого в ходе Восточно-Прусской стратегической операции 22 января 1945 года штурмом овладели крупным опорным пунктом немецко-фашистских войск - г. Инстербургом (ныне Черняховск). 18 февраля 1945 года в районе г. Мельзак в Восточной Пруссии (ныне Пененжно, Польша) был смертельно ранен и в тот же день скончался. В год 70-летия Великой Победы школе № 5 г. Черняховска присвоено имя героя". Ниже основной доски установлена дополнительная со словами: "Герой - это гордое слово, И грозное слово - война.
