On this site in the Old Single Dock H.M.S. "Victory" was laid down on 23rd August 1759 and launched on 70th May 1765. She was almost entirely rebuilt in Chatham yard during the years 1800 to 1803 and on 30th July 1803 she hoisted the tag of Lord Nelson Who, on 21st October 1805 received his mortal wound at the battle of Trafalgar His body was brought to England on board H.M.S. "Victory" and transferred to she Commissioners yacht "Chatham" at Sheerness on 22nd December 1805. It was thence conveyed to Greenwich where it lay in state until it was removed for interment in St Paul's Cathedral
