Upon the site of this building stood the house wherein lived and died Thomas Bewick the wood engraver born 1753 died 1828

Above the original stone plaque is a bronze plaque inscribed “1828-1928 The centenary of the death of Thomas Bewick was commemorated on 8th November 1928. Ald. W.E. Wardill J.P. - Mayor. W. Swinburne - Town Clerk.”
