High Level Bridge. George Stephenson, first surveyed routes to Berwick in 1838. His son, Robert, 1803 - 1859, designed this bridge. Rail deck opened in 1849 - a major link in a London-Edinburgh railway. The road deck opened in February 1850.

Lilley Brickworks Coke ovens built by the Priestman Colliery Company were converted in 1890 to produce common bricks for use in their collieries. The works closed in 1976.

The old Scotswood Bridge crossed the river 110 feet downstream of this point & was completed in 1831, being at that time one of the longest spans in the world (367 ft.) The suspension chains which gave rise to its name of the Chain Bridge were replaced in 1931 by wire ropes (which had been used in the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge) when the deck wasreconstructed. The old bridge was demolished in 1967 leaving only the north abutment to show the old crossing point.

Blaydon Races Official racing started in 1861 on Blaydon Island which lay North of here. The song was written in 1862. From 1887 to 1914 the race course was on Stella Haugh, the site of the former power station.

Felling Colliery Disaster. 25 May 1812. Of 92 men and boys killed in a colliery explosion at Felling Colliery, 91 were buried in this churchyard and are commemorated here on a memorial. The Rev John Hodgson of this church took up the cause of mine safety and, as a direct result of his efforts, the miners' safety lamp was developed.
