Elephant and Castle, Holland Street

place and public house

Aged unknown

Commemorated on 1 plaque

The Elephant & Castle, Holland Street, is in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, whose land was originally owned by the De Vere family, later the Earls of Oxford, where they remained the landowners until the 16th Century, when the manor was split. The name Elephant & Castle has long been disputed, one possibility being that the name derives from Cutlers Company in London, whose emblem since 1622 has been that of a war elephant with a howdah on its back; the second being that it is a shortened name of Henry VIII's first queen, Catherine of Aragon, whose Spanish title was 'Infanta de Castille and Aragon'
