In 1865 the game of Lawn Tennis was originated and played here by Major T. H. Gem solicitor and sportsman and J. B. A. Perera merchant
As early as 1859 (not 1865 as listed on the plaque) Harry and his friend Augurio created 'Pelota' or 'Lawn Rackets' in the garden of Perera’s home in Ampton Road. It was clearly a forerunner of the modern game of lawn tennis - but they did not invent lawn tennis per se. -- The Harry Gem Project
