Elizabeth Barrett Browning 1806-1861 poet lived in a house on this site 1838-1846

This is effectively a supplementary plaque of http://openplaques.org/plaques/2513. The 18th century house where Barrett Browning had lived was demolished in 1936 and, after both the London County Council and the Royal Society of Arts declined the offer of the plaque, was re-erected high up on the new structure. An additional carved stone inscription was added at ground floor level to make it clear that Barrett Browning lived in a house that stood on the site rather than the current one.
