Percy Bysshe Shelley 1792-1822 poet lived here in 1811
The GLC erected a plaque in 1979 to commemorate Shelley (who had lived in Poland street for a very short time - just over a month in 1811) but it was lost during refurbishment work and replaced by English Heritage in 2000. Both plaques were surface mounted enamelled steel types, chosen on account of the poor condition of the brickwork of the buildings facade., which had been damaged by an IRA bomb in January 1976.
