새내 내력비 (新川 遺跡碑) 한강 원물줄기와 새내(新川)라고 하던 샛강 사이에 있던 새냇마을이 지금은 온데간데 모르게 변하여 겨우 신천동 동명 만이 남아 전한다. 돌이켜 보면 새냇마을의 내력도 세월따라 우역곡절이 많았다. 600년도 더 먼 옛날 지금의 광진구 자양동땅은 삼면이 강물로 휘둘린 반도지형이었다. 그런 중에 조선조 초기부터 이곳에 나라에서 누에 치는 동잠실을 설치하면서 여기는 항용 잠실이라고 불렸다. 그러다가 1520년(중종15)에 홍수가 반도땅을 동강내며 휩쓸고 지나간 통에 샛강이 생기고, 잠실은 섬으로 변하였다. 그 후로 샛강을 새내라고 하였는데 어느덧 샛강가에 마을이 커지면서 새냇마을이라 하였다. 그 후에도 새냇마을은 잠실과 함께 경기도 양주군 고양주면에 예속되었더니 1914년 경기도 고양군 뚝도면으로 편입되면서 신천리가 되었다가 다시 1949년 이후로 서울특별시 관활로 편입되면서 성동구 신천동이 되었다. 그러다가 1971년 한강종합개발공사 때 이 곳 한강 원물줄기를 막고 대신 샛강 폭을 넓히면서 새냇마을은 그만 물에 잠기고 그 일부가 잠실대교 하류 800m 지점의 일부 고수부지 및 강변도로, 지금의 장미, 미주, 주공고층 아파트단지로 남아서 강남의 육지와 연결되었다. "한강의 기적" 이라는 표어를 낳게 한 한강종합개발 대사업공사 이후로 강남은 날로 발전을 거듭하여 새냇마을도 1975년 강남구로 편입되었다가 79년에 강동구로 분구되고 88년에 다시 송파구로 분구되어 오늘에 이른다. 지난 날 새냇 마을은 120여가구에 500여명 남짓한 주민들이 근근히 농사를 지으면 장마철마다 수해를 면치 못하였건만, 추석철이면 잠실 부렴에 살던 토박이들과 어울려 새냇마을 공마당에서 마을잔치겸 체육행사를 하며 남다른 정분을 나누던 그런 고향이었다. 새냇마을 토박이들이 내 고향을 떠나면서 거의 모두가 지금의 송파구 잠실본동으로 옮겨 앉아 서로 의지하고 서로 도와가며 새마을을 일군지도 어언 30여년……. 그시절 그 고향이 못내 그리워 옛정을 달래고자 오늘 잠실본동 이자리에 이 비석을 세운다. 2001년 10월 3일 새냇마을 향우회 회원 일동
