Cité Internationale Universitaire. Sur un terrain de 40 hectares libéré par la démolition des anciennes fortifications fut créée, à partir de 1920, la Cité Internationale Universitaire, destinée à "favoriser les échanges entre les étudiants de toutes les nationalités choisis à un niveau élevé de leurs études et compte tenu de leurs ressources". Trente-sept pavillons, élevés entre 1923 et 1968, forment un ensemble architectural original et varié ainsi la très anglo-saxenne Fondation Deutsch de la Meurthe (Lucien Bechmann, 1925), la Fondation Suisse (Le Corbusier, 1932), le Collège néerlandais (W. Marinus-Didok, 1938) d'esprit cubiste, ou la Fondation franco-brésilienne (Lucio Costa et Le Corbusier, 1959). La Cité accueille près de 5000 étudiants de 120 nationalités différentes; elle dispose également d'une maison internationale ouverte à tous, d'un hôpital et d'une église dédiée au Sacré-Coeur des Etudiants, construite, faute de place, sur le territoire de Gentilly.
