Evergreen Cemetery. A rural community of farming families once existed in this area. Known as Evergreen, it was named for the numerous evergreen trees in the vicinity. A small school and church building provided a gathering place for the community. Land given for the school in 1879 by early settlers R.T. and Susan Lively also became the site of a community graveyard. The earliest known burial to occur here was that of Philip Pipkin (1817-1886). Others interred in the cemetery include descendants of the Lively and other pioneer families. #11233

The Coal Hole The Original Coal Hole was located in a cellar in fountain court a few yards from our present establishment. Its name seems to have derived from the coal heavers who worked nearby on the river thames. Edmund Kean, one of the biggest theatrical stars of his day, founded the wolf club at the coal hole. The story was that it was established for oppressed husbands who were not allowed to sing in the bath. The reality was an excuse for heavy drinking in the company of loose women Kean collapsed on stage in 1833 and died later. The old coal hole was demolished in 1889 and this building opened in 1904, briefly called the new strand wine lodge.

Golconda. Golconda, a one-time Utah territory mining town and a landmark on the California Emigrant Trail, was famous for its hot springs.  The Hot Springs Hotel was a swanky resort with doctors on staff.n 1868, Golconda became an ore shipping station on the new Central Pacific Railroad.  Renewed mining activity in 1897 resulted in the building of the narrow gauge Golconda and Adelaide Railroad south to the Adelaide mine.  Golconda grew to 500 inhabitants by 1899, but the next year the mine and mill closed and railroad service ceased.
