The Cotton Tree public house Opened in 1830 and so named as it coincided with the opening of the cotton mills in the Newton area by the Ashton Brothers. Features prominently in the Chartist movement, largely because Joseph Rayner Stephens, Dr. P. M. McDouall and John Bradley were arrested as a result of a meeting held here on 28th July 1839 A popular meeting place for the local Chartists where crowds would meet after dark with firearms and banners to further their cause for political and social reform

Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) renowned children's story teller, author and artist famous for Peter Rabbit book. Beatrix's maternal grandparents John and Jane Leech bought the Gorse Hall Estate after their marriage and built the Gorse Hall Mansion which was demolished in 1910. Born in London, Beatrix in later life made several visits to her grand parents and recorded her fond memories of theplace.

Frances Burgess (neé Lockett) (1910-1993) Nineteen-year-old Frances Lockett of Hyde was voted the Town's first Cotton Queen in 1930. Later that year she became the first Cotton Queen for Britain. After receiving the award she returned home to a 20,000 strong crowd. She lived at 16 Queen Street, Hyde.

Corporal Kenneth Horsfield GC 1920-1944 Awarded the George Cross (GC), the highest award for conspicuous courage out of battle. Corporal Horsfield was born in Hyde, served in the 9th Manchester Regiment, and was seconded to the SAS. He is the only Tameside citizen to have received this award following his gallant rescue efforts that resulted in his own loss of life in Italy on 18 August 1944. Croft Street was the former family home.

Fred Wood (1876-1934) In honour of a forgotten hero, who on this day in 1907 undoubtedly prevented the deaths of hundreds of local workers when the couplings broke on a heavily laden goods train as it approached this station. Over 50 laden wagons sped back down the line heading towards Dukinfield Station and an occupied 'workers' train. Turning the points, he forced the runaway train onto a track towards Dukinfield goods yard, narrowly averting a major disaster.

Frank Hampson 1918-1985 Born at this house, Frank Hampson is famous for creating the world renowned cartioon strip science fiction character Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future whose world he invented, wrote about and drew. Dan Dare appeared in the Eagle magazine, launched on 14th April 1950. Frank died in Epsom where he had resided for many years drawing Dan Dare and other characters

Prophet John Wroe 1782-1863 Founded the Christian Israelite Church and declared that Ashton-under-Lyne would be the new Jerusalem. Four gatehouses were built, of which this building was one. Later banished for alleged indecent behaviour he went to Australia where the Christian Israelite Church still survives today.

Lord Wright of Ashton-under-Lyne (1903-1974) An influential figure in the British Textile Industry representing the Amalgamated Weavers Association, the Cotton Board and later the Textile Council. In 1968, Lord Wright became General Secretary of the Trade Union Congress and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Technology from Loughborough University. He was made a Life Peer in the 1968 New Year's Honours list. Lord Wright lived at 12 Brookfield Grove, Ashton-under-Lyne from 1940 to 1974. Unveiled on 20 September 2005

Brian Wilde 1927-2008 born in Ashton-under-Lyne and lived here at 43 Montague Road during his early childhood. Best known for his BBC Television role as Prison Officer Barrowclough in 'Porridge' and Corporal Walter 'Foggy' Dewhurst in 'Last of the Summer Wine'. Trained at RADA, his career encompassed stage, radio, film and television for over half a century.

This sculpture was designed with considerable help from children at St.Peter's Primary School, Ashton to remember The Ashton Munitions Explosion. At 4.22pm on Wednesday 13 June 1917, 5 tons of TNT exploded at the Hooley Hill Rubber and Chemical Factory on William Street, near to Oxford Street, in Ashton. A plaque is near to the site of the disaster on William Street to commemorate where 46 people were killed and more than 400 were injured with hundreds more made homeless. Many of the killed were children on the way home from school on that fine June afternoon.

Ashton Munitions Explosion Nearby was the site of the Hooley Hill Rubber and Chemical Company where on June 13 1917, 5 tons of TNT due to go to the manufacture of shells for the 1st World War exploded destroying the factory and much of the surrounding area. 46 people lost their lives.
