The Rt. Hon. John Frederick Cheetham (1835-1916) Born in Stalybridge MP for Stalybridge from 1905 to 1910 In 1897 Mr Cheetham presented to the town the public library now known as The Astley Cheetham Public Library and Arts Gallery. In recognition of this, he was made an Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Stalybridge. His generosity continued after his death with the bequest of his home Eastwood House and his art collection, now known as The Astley Cheetham Collection. Sadly the house was demolished but the grounds remain as Cheetham Park.

Joseph Rayner Stephens 1805-1879 Trained in the Ministry Joseph Rayner Stephens came to Ashton in 1832. He became an important Chartist Leader who campaigned against the Poor Law and for factory reform. His greatness was in his instinctive reaction to human distress and social injustice. In later life he lived in Stalybridge where he established a People's School and is buried in St John's Church, Dukinfield

Ada Jane Summers MBE, JP (1861-1944) First woman councillor in Tameside and elected first Woman Mayor of Stalybridge in November 1919 A month later Mrs Summers was sworn in as a magistrate, becoming the first woman to adjudicate on an English Bench. In October 1920 she was appointed a Justice of the Peace for the Boroughs' magisterial duties. Known locally as "The Lady Bountiful", Mrs Summers had many interested and was president of a variety of groups and societies. Her admirable work for the town gained her an MBE On May 31st 1939, the town council made her an honourable freeman on the Borough

Samuel Laycock 1826-1893 A dialect poet whose work presents a vivid impression of mid-nineteenth century working class life. He drew on his personal experience in the cotton industry. He came to Stalybridge aged eleven. He was the librarian at the Mechanics Institute from 1865 until 1871. His best loved poems are 'Bowton's Yard' and 'Bonny Brid', both written in Stalybridge.

Eli Whalley Donkey Stone Manufacturers The firm of Eli Whalley, the last mass producer of donkey stones in the country, closed early in 1979 and was based here at Donkey Stone Wharf. Donkey stones are scouring stones, named after the trade-mark of one of the earliest firms, Reads of Manchester, and were cream, brown and white. Originally used to put non-slip surface on greasy stone staircases in the mills of Lancashire and Yorkshire and later by proud housewives, who made stoning the front door step a form of decoration and competition. Eli Whalley's trade-mark, the "lion brand", impressed on the stones was taken from a photograph of live specimen in Belle Vue Zoo.

Francis Lovell (1454-1487) Lord of Longdendale, favourite of Richard III, his Chief Butler and Chamberlain of the household. Fought at the Battle of Bosworth on 22 August 1485 and later in an abortive uprising against Henry VII. Following the Battle of Stoke, Lovell's body was not found, but there is a tradition that in 1708 his body was discovered in a chamber at Minster Lovell, his home near Oxford. When exposed to the fresh air, the skeleton crumbled to dust.

Crimean War (1854-56) This Plaque is in honour of the local men of Tameside who served in the Crimean War. The bridge was built in the first year of the War and was named after first major battle, the Battle of Alma, fought by the British and French against an unsuccessful Russian Army. Alma Bridge also served as a Toll Bar and monies were collected until 26th June 1902. Unveiled by Executive Leader of Tameside Counsil, Councillor Roy Oldham CBE on 23rd April 2002

The Hyde Colliery Explosion 18th January 1889 This plaque is located near to the site where a horrific gas explosion in the Hyde Lane Coal Pit killed 23 men and seriously injured 5 more victims. The inquest recorded that the explosion took place at some distance from a shaft, which was known as the "Two Foot Level" shortly after 7.00 am. The verdict reported that the incident was accidental and was started by the site of naked lights by the miners. Unveiled by Councillor Joe Kitchen, Cabinet Deputy of Lifelong Learning on February 21st 2001.

The Norfolk Arms Disaster 1st April 1829. This plaque is located on the former site of The Norfolk Arms, where an appalling disaster took place during the depression of the cotton trade. The catastrophe occurred when almost 700 operatives met to discuss a threat by employers to reduce their wages. 29 men and women were killed, with many more injured, when the floor of the room collapsed, leaving the unfortunate victims to crash into the cellar.

Henry Vollam Morton (1892-1979) International Journalist and Travel Writer born in Ashton-under-Lyne. Morton's work captured the spirit of England and other great countries from the 1920's to the 1960's and provided a great literary contribution throughout those five decades. He reported the discovery of the Tutankhamun tomb in 1923 and the historic meeting between Winston Churchill and President Roosevelt in 1941. He has travelled 'around like a magpie, picking up bright things that pleased him' and recorded them for our pleasure.

Bill Sowerbutts (1911-1990) broadcaster and market gardener. Bill became a very talented vegetable grower from an early age. He rose to fame in 1947 with his regular appearances on the famous radio show "Gardeners Question Time" which he did for 36 years. Bill loved his 10 acre wildlife garden here at his home in 'Etherow Lodge'. This garden was transferred to Tameside Council in 1984 for the public to enjoy.

Gardeners Question Time (1947) The first programme of Gardeners Question Time was broadcast from the Broadoak Hotel in the 'singing room' on April 9th 1947. Originally named "How does you garden grow?", it was an offshoot of the war time Dig for Victory campaign. On the first panel were Bill Sowerbutts, Fred Loads, Tom Clark and Dr E. W. Sansome. The programme is still broadcast today to thousands of listeners.

Corporal Kenneth Horsfield GC 1920-1944 Awarded the George Cross (GC), the highest award for conspicuous courage out of battle. Corporal Horsfield was born in Hyde, served in the 9th Manchester Regiment, and was seconded to the SAS. He is the only Tameside citizen to have received this award following his gallant rescue efforts that resulted in his own loss of life in Italy on 18 August 1944. Fred Wood (1876-1934) In honour of a forgotten hero, who on this day in 1907 undoubtedly prevented the deaths of hundreds of local workers when the couplings broke on a heavily laden goods train as it approached this station. Over 50 laden wagons sped back down the line heading towards Dukinfield Station and an occupied 'workers' train. Turning the points, he forced the runaway train onto a track towards Dukinfield goods yard, narrowly averting a major disaster.

Prophet John Wroe 1782-1863 Founded the Christian Israelite Church and declared that Ashton-under-Lyne would be the new Jerusalem. Four gatehouses were built, of which this building was one. Lord Wright of Ashton-under-Lyne (1903-1974) An influential figure in the British Textile Industry representing the Amalgamated Weavers Association, the Cotton Board and later the Textile Council. In 1968, Lord Wright became General Secretary of the Trade Union Congress and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Technology from Loughborough University. This sculpture was designed with considerable help from children at St.Peter's Primary School, Ashton to remember The Ashton Munitions Explosion. At 4.22pm on Wednesday 13 June 1917, 5 tons of TNT exploded at the Hooley Hill Rubber and Chemical Factory on William Street, near to Oxford Street, in Ashton. A plaque is near to the site of the disaster on William Street to commemorate where 46 people were killed and more than 400 were injured with hundreds more made homeless. Many of the killed were children on the way home from school on that fine June afternoon.

Ashton Munitions Explosion Nearby was the site of the Hooley Hill Rubber and Chemical Company where on June 13 1917, 5 tons of TNT due to go to the manufacture of shells for the 1st World War exploded destroying the factory and much of the surrounding area. 46 people lost their lives.
