This garden was created from a bare chalk pit by Sir Frederick Stern OBE, MC 1884-1967. It was started in 1910 and gradually developed into a collection of plants that will grow in chalky soils. Some specimens are from original seeds sent home by collectors. It was presented to Worthing Corporation by Lady Stern as a memorial to Sir Frederick.

Beach House In 1937 Beach House provided sanctuary for 60 refugee children from the Basque region of Spain who came to Britain fleeing bombing and starvation after the destruction of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. They were supported and cared for entirely by local volunteers.
