The War Memorial On instigation in 1921 by Harald Thesen, a veteran of the First World War, a subscription list was opened and £450 was collected towards a war memorial to honour those who had lost their lives in the service of their country. Designed by architect Charles Walgate of Cape Town and built by John Donald of Knysna from stone quarried on the Brenton Hills, the memorial included a two-edged bronze sword and wreath designed by Marlon Walgate and a bronze plaque by HG Stevens, listing the names of the fallen. The War Memorial was unveiled on 17 December 1922 by The Reverend Captain Alfred Duthie, M.C., Chaplain to the Forces in Flanders and France during The Great War. Plaques bearing the names of the deceased from the Second World War and the Bush War have been added.

The new St. George's Church In April 1919 during the incumbency of the Rev. B.C. Mortimer, a resolution by the parishioners was taken to build a new church which would also serve to be a living monument to those that had died during the Great War 1914-1918. The project came to a halt in 1922 when initial tenders revealed a severe shortage of funds, and it was only in September 1926 that the foundation stone was laid by the Rt. Rev. Bishop Henry Sidwell, DD, Lord Bishop of George. The design of the church, to accommodate a congregation of 250, was by architects Simpson & Bridgman of Oudtshoorn, the tender offer of £6300 was accepted and the builder was J. Donald of Knysna. The building was completed by a Building Committee. To raise additional funds, glebe lands in Vootrekker Road and Paradise Farm were sold, and after many setbacks, the first service in the new church was held in 1928. The Rt. Rev. Bishop Herbert L. Gwyer consecrated the church in 1937 when all the debts had been settled.

MIV Historical Plaques Program #0059
Taggerty Mechanics' Institute. Opened on 15 April 1898. The Mechanics' Institute movement began in British urban industrial centres in the early 1800s. A "mechanic" was a person applying skills and technology. During the 19th century, most towns in Victoria established a Mechanics' Institute or Athenaeum with a library and meeting hall. Common objects were the "spread of useful knowledge" and provision for "rational recreation" in the community. This plaque, No. 59 in the MIV series, was placed here by the Taggerty Hall Committee to acknowledge the dedication of those who built the hall, and all who have maintained it in a long history. It has provided a place for social enjoyment, education, meetings, and shelter in times of trouble. The Honour Board commemorating the district volunteers in the Great War is a reminder of the truly testing times endured by our forbears. Today this beautiful building still serves the community, and is a centre for local activities, drawing the community together as intended by the founders.

Bridge Street The 'River of Life' design in Bridge Street depicts the course of the River Mersey as it flows through the Borough of Warrington from Hollins Green and Rixton (at Market Gate) to Penketh (close to Rylands Street). Along the course of the River, twelve bronze disca, designed by local primary school children, detail themes of nature, local history and geography. The scheme was designed by the artist Stephen Broadbent in partnership with Warrington Borough Council. The central water feature is, in part, a memorial to two local children who died following the terrorist bomb explosion in Bridge Street in 1993. Young people from the Great Sankey High School helped the artist with the design work. Seats in the street feature themes detailing Warrington's industries, past and present, including metal working, wire making and tool manufacturing. The lighting columns incorporate motifs taken from Warrington Town Hall gates and the Coat of Arms of families influential in the history of the town. The scheme was implemented by Warrington Borough Council and opened by HRH The Duchess of Kent on 14th November 1996.

On the night of August 12, 1814, seventy seamen and marines, led by Captain Alexander T. Dobbs, R.N., embarked in this vicinity to attempt the capture of three armed U.S. schooners lying off American-held Fort Erie. One of the six boats used had been carried some 40 km from Queenston, while the others were brought overland from Frenchman's Creek. Masquerading as supply craft, the force boarded and seized the "Somers" and "Ohio", the "Porcupine" alone escaping. Two of the attackers, including their second-in-command, Lieutenant Copleston Radcliffe, R.N., were killed. This daring exploit was the last naval action fought on the Great Lakes during the War of 1812.

Walmgate Bar. Probably built in the reign of Edward I. The wood and plaster building on the inner side is of the Elizabethan period. This Bar was greatly damaged during the siege of York 1644 by Parliamentarians' battery fire from Lamel Hill. The portcullis and gates remain and this Bar alone retains its barbican which was erected in the reign of Edward III. The Arms of Henry V are on the outer side. Im Mittelalter gab es hier im Löschwesen keine besondere Organisation: Im Brandfall half jeder jedem. Auf allen Hofstellen standen neben den Brunnen Löscheimer. Beim Ertönen der Feuerglocke oder der Hornsignale lief man zum Sammelplatz und schwärmte von dort zum Brandherd aus. 1743 beantragte der Amtsvogt bei der Churfürstlichen Cammer die Anschaffung einer „Feuersprütze nebst zwei Feuer-Tübben (Wasserfässer) und 7 Hakens“. Zwei Jahre später wurde ein „Sprützen-Haus“ auf dem Vogthof als Anbau an den Pferdestall von 32 Fuß Länge, 12 Fuß Breite und 12 Fuß Höhe errichtet (1 Fuß= ca. 33cm). Das Eichenholz hierfür konnte zinsfrei aus der Cananohe beschafft werden. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bildeten sich freiwillige Löschvereine, die sich überwiegend aus Mitgliedern der Turnvereine rekrutierten. Als 1891 das Pastorenhaus gegenüber der Dorfkirche in Flammen aufging, gründete sich Anfang 1892 die Freiwillige Feuerwehr Langenhagen, maßgeblich mitinitiiert durch den Leiter der Heil-und Pflegeanstalt. 31 aktive und 11 passive Mitglieder hatte die Wehr. Röcke und Ausrüstung mussten die Feuerwehrmänner auf eigene Kosten beschaffen. Erst ab 1905, nachdem der Verein sich stark verschuldet hatte, übernahm die Gemeinde diese Kosten. An der Walsroder Straße Ecke Pestalozziweg auf dem Grundstück der heutigen Sparkasse wurde eine Wagenremise zum Spritzenhaus umgebaut und ein Schlauchturm errichtet, zwei neue Handspritzen und diverse Schläuche wurden angeschafft. Beide Weltkriege brachten für die Wehr große Herausforderungen. Viele Feuerwehrkameraden fielen in den Kriegen oder wurden verwundet. Besonders bei Rettungseinsätzen im II. Weltkrieg kam die Wehr an ihre Grenzen. 29 Bürger sollten mit einem sogenannten „Notdienstzug“ für Verstärkung sorgen. Durch die Vereinigung der Gemeinden Brink und Langenforth mit Langenhagen wuchsen auch die Wehren zusammen. Die Räumlichkeiten am Pestalozziweg entsprachen längst nicht mehr den gestiegenen Anforderungen. 1968 fand in der geplanten Stadtmitte an der Konrad-Adenauer-Straße die Grundsteinlegung für eine neue Feuerwache statt. 1970 wurde die Wache eingeweiht, die Notrufzentrale war rund um die Uhr besetzt. 2007 wählten die Mitglieder erstmalig in der Geschichte der Wehr eine Frau zur Ortsbrandmeisterin. Seit vielen Jahren gibt es aktive Jugend- und Kinderfeuerwehrgruppen. Nach An- und Umbauten und Übernahme der Räume der ehemaligen Rettungswache der Johanniter Unfallhilfe konnte die Feuerwache endlich erweitert werden. Insgesamt hat die Freiwillige Ortsfeuerwehr Langenhagen derzeit 83 aktive und 41 fördernde Mitglieder. Darüber hinaus gibt es 30 Mitglieder in der Jugendfeuerwehr, sowie 15 in der Kinderfeuerwehr und 31 in der Altersabteilung.
